They flew south toward the wellspring. Ordin said that though he hadn’t been to this particular wellspring, he knew it was on a hill amidst a sea of golden grass with small ruins surrounding it. If that was indeed the case, they shouldn’t have had a hard time finding it.

But they did.

The problem was that Vorlei was big. Nearly the size of Protea but with more rolling seas of windswept grass. Less civilization existed here, where the majority of people congregated near the coasts. They did spy some farms and the occasional town, but no cities, and no ruins that they could tell. Of course, that was more of a blessing than not, since the less people out, the less likely they were to be seen.

Cailan held tight to Zehra the entire time, his stomach in knots with worry. He had a bad feeling about this new quest, both about its completion and difficulty, and also the rewards thereafter. Would the council be able to help them? The was too much uncertainty to be comfortable.

He knew, however, that he had to stay focused on the task at hand. There were more pressing things to worry about and that reward could be worried about when they were successful. Not before.

He had another thought as they flew through the long stretches of golden grass and tiny copses of trees, over the rolling hills and meandering brooks and rivers.

This was a lovely wilderness, one you could get lost in. If it ever came to it, which it might if they were able to return Zehra to her home, this would be a good place to hide. They couldn’t return to Protea. That life was probably over. The king wasn’t just going to forgive them for stealing his dragon. He and Cass were branded as traitors, and Murk and Aideen were wanted as well. Aideen at least could have a safe place among their people, and Murk was well equipped for life on the run, but the Enger siblings were not.

Once this was all over, this wouldn’t be a bad place to stay. Maybe they could work on one of the many farms or perhaps serve as a city guardsman. He could see himself staying here.

Of course, it wouldn’t be as bright without Zehra, but she deserved to go home. He could manage whatever came after.

These thoughts and more occupied his mind for a long while, and the minutes blurred to hours until the sun was deep on the western horizon, heading toward the Blue Wastes beyond the mountains. And beyond those wastes, the Rift that led to the dragon realm. He wondered what it would be like to go there and see all that. Perhaps, if their luck was good, they would get the chance.

Eventually, they saw a cluster of marble ruins amidst a few hills in the distance. Aideen leaned forward and pointed at it. “That’s it. That’s the wellspring.”

“How do you know?” he asked.

“I can…feel the magic in the air. It’s thicker here, more primal.
